by Irene Butler – Photos by Rick - Our New Zealand Photo Gallery - Our first impression of Auckland is how “at home” we felt. We are struck by the similarities to our hometown of Vancouver BC – from the waterfront filled with cruise ships, yachts and sailboats, to the fine shopping areas and malls, to the quiet tree-lined residential streets. Even the weather is as temperamental as Vancouver’s, in that all four seasons can be experienced in one day. On our first major walk our throbbing thighs confirm the roller-coaster terrain of Auckland which rests on 49 volcanic cones, some rounding off at such a height as to award a panoramic view. After taking in the architectural highlights of the city centre we venture further out to The Domain, a vast park where we do a few bush walks, then delight in the formal gardens of flowering plants. The park is a happening place, with picnicking families and a crowd of folks sitting on the grass in front of a gazebo stage where a jazz band and singers belt out tunes. We spot the impressive structure we are looking for at the back of The Domain – the Auckland [...]

By Irene Butler – Photos by Rick - Our Waitomo Caves Photo Gallery - We get up extra early, aim our rental car and head out from Rotorua to the hilly Waitomo region. On the scenic 2 ½ hour drive we drive through verdant valleys, past fields of corn and flocks of grazing sheep and herds of grass mulching cattle. It boggles my mind knowing that underneath the hills of Waitomo region are 300 known limestone caves, and we are excited to see the caves that are open to the public that go by the same name as the region – the Waitomo Caves. A song pops into my mind, which I share with Rick and we both sing as we breeze along, “Shine little glowworm, glimmer, glimmer…” in anticipation of actually seeing them. “This song sure dates us,” says Rick. “But,” I say in our defence, “when this version of the song became a Mills Brothers hit in 1950, we were mere children.” Arriving at the Waitomo Visitor’s Centre, we purchase “Triple Cave Combo” tickets to see the works: the Glowworm, Aranui and Ruakui Caves. The Glowworm Cave is first. Hardie, our guide, explains the lifecycle of the glowworm [...]

by Irene Butler – Click Our Fiji Photo Gallery – A whole month in Fiji! How “bula” is that! After a solo press trip to this tropical paradise a few years ago, my husband Rick made me promise we would come back together someday – and here we are! A fine start is settling into our clean, cozy room at Jetset Accommodation in New Town on Vita Levu (the largest of the Fiji’s 333 islands). This is to be our home base for the month. After a refreshing dip in the hotel’s pool, we walk a block to Wailoaloa Beach to begin our bronzing with a long walk alongside the shimmering bright blue Pacific and to contemplate life with a cappuccino at one of the cafes that dot the shore. The other decisions are whether to spend the day around our hood or to head out to some other island niche. This leisurely existence readily becomes a delightful routine. We are quick to adopt a snail’s pace in the sauna-like 33°C temperature. Even the locals comment, “hot day”, and we are loving it. Several times a week we hop the bus to Nadi (pronounced Nandi) 5 km away. With Christmas [...]

By Irene Butler - Since tales of Aladdin swept my imagination away on a magic carpet in grade school, my desire to journey through the Arabian Peninsula has not waned. Sixty years later, I am to realize this dream. My husband Rick and I arrive in Qatar, the small country that jets into the Arabian Sea like a thumb off Saudi Arabia’s border, to discover how this culture steeped in tradition has melded with modernity.
by Irene Butler.- Published in Travel Lady Magazine - I have long been intrigued by Romania’s mysterious folklore. Images flash through my mind of free-spirited Roma (gypsies) moving across the countryside, gifted with musical abilities and with psychic powers to tell fortunes or bring on a curse. The very word Transylvania sends a shiver down my spine, and blood curdling images of haunted castles and fanged creatures. My husband Rick and I are ready to find the historical threads in the folklore. We leave by train from Bucharest to Transylvania – one of the largest and most picturesque regions in the centre of Romania known for its historical mix of flavours of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Saxons and brief Ottoman rule. Between verdant foothills of the southern Carpathian Mountains, we arrive in the medieval town of Brasov. Check out our Romania Photo Gallery On our first walk down Str Republicii I am enthralled by the lively and colourful atmosphere. Sidewalk cafés run down the middle of this wide pedestrian-only promenade. Seeing “Possibly the Best City in the World” written on the café umbrellas makes me chuckle as I muse “perhaps it is”. But without question this charming city flaunts the narrowest [...]

By Irene Butler. Back in 2001 we entered Poland via train from Budapest, or attempted to…at 4 a.m. we were escorted off the train by armed guards at the border between Poland and Slovakia….why? We thought since our United States neighbours did not require a visa that we Canadians would not require a visa. WRONG! This year (a decade later) we flew into Warsaw and breezed through immigration with the customs officer barely glancing at our passports. I like to think this was to make up for last time, but in reality the visa requirement was lifted for Canadians in 2004 when Poland became part of the European Union. Check out our Poland Photo Gallery Warsaw proved to be worth the wait! We were swept back in time walking the streets of the Old Town’s Plac Zamkowy (Castle Square) resplendent in 17th and 18th century architecture, historically the time of Warsaw’s greatest prosperity. It was mind-boggling to think these buildings had been bombed to rubble during WWII, and were completely rebuilt from their foundations. In the Royal Castle, one of the massive reconstruction projects, this is vividly brought to life in a series of photos: the castle as it was [...]
