By Irene Butler – Published in Travellady e-zine and Canadian Traveller Magazine - Click for our Mexico Photo Galleries My spirited steed Bambino galloped along the white sand beach. The sapphire Sea of Cortez lapped the shore on one side; desert shrub nodded lethargically in the sun on the other. This same stretch of sheltered beach was once a hideaway for pirates bent on raiding Spain’s galleons. Many of today’s local business owners and fishermen are descendants of the buccaneers who stayed behind. After her exhilarating spurt, Bambino fell back to a more leisurely pace along with the six other horses and riders until we were back at the corral. On other trails people zoomed along on ATV’s. For sure there would be no shortage of fun things to do in this little slice of paradise. It is my second day in Los Cabos, the big shot of Baja California, and I already feel its three personalities rolled into one. San Jose del Cabo is a traditional Mexican town with a central plaza, adobe structures, and municipal market. Cabo San Lucas is more bent on partying and fashionable good looks. Linking the two towns is the Los Cabos Corridor, a [...]

“Why do they put a worm in Tequila?” I ask as my wife Irene and I sit sipping the caramel coloured elixir that provokes taste buds into doing the Mexican hat dance. “Ah, Amigo,” answers our guide Angelica, who was born and raised in Guadalajara, “you need to visit the Raven to learn about Tequila.” So our quest begins. Angelica arranged for us to leave Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico’s capitol and financial centre, the next morning. After a one hour drive we arrive at Tequila where this luscious, soothing concoction is made. Just outside the town we meet Cecilia and Ismael at an agave farm. This is to be my first lesson; agave is the main ingredient in tequila. Cecilia explains, “The agave plant takes 20 years to mature from a seed to the point that the plant is suitable for making tequila, but we can’t wait that long.” Ismael cuts off a miniature plant from the larger one and Cecilia informs us that this is a ‘baby’ agave…..
In Tropical Riviera Nayarit by Irene Butler Published in TravelLady E-Zine and Senior’s Choice Magazine and TravelingTales.com Curtains of foliage drape the sides of narrow waterways deep in the mangrove forest. Our small boat manoeuvres past the bulging roots which hold these amazing trees upright in the brackish water’s silt base. Crocodiles appear as drifting logs, until they swish their powerful tails. Large swamp turtles laze in the sun on the protruding roots. A pitch-black bird is oddly perched on a branch; its motionless wings spread like a fan. Our guide Richardo says, “That Anhinga is drying his feathers after diving for his lunch.” A White Ibis, then a Tiger Heron make an appearance in this coastal wildlife refuse of La Tovara.
by Irene Butler – Published in Air Canada E Newsletter - Blissfully wrapped in turquoise surf, sandy beaches and alluring jungle, my “id” leapt for joy (as Freud would say) as I scurried between the kaleidoscope of attractions and activities. Xcaret (ish-cah-reht) Eco Park is a sampling of all that is Mexico. Paramount in design, development and operation, the park provides sustainability for both the local communities and environment. With something for everyone, whether from ages six to sixty-plus, my husband Rick and I could readily see why this delightful site is also known as Mexico’s Disneyland. A ride up the 80-metre rotating tower was a good place to start, awarding us a panoramic view of the 200-acre park and the Caribbean flaunting inviting blue shades above the second largest coral reef in the world……… Click here to read more: Air Canada E Newsletter.
